One held in DRI raid in Beemapally

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 29 . The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Sunday raided a house in Beemapally and arrested Hassan alias "Annachi" Hassan in connection with the seizure of contraband goods valued at Rs. 1.8 crores from the Air Cargo complex at the International Airport here in August.

The accused was produced before the Economic Offences court in Ernakulam and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. An official said the contraband items had been imported as unaccompanied baggage. The consignment was declared as "second goods of no commercial value."

The DRI officials who inspected the consignment found hundreds of brand new car stereos, digital studio equipment and other costly electronic components. The goods had been imported misusing the Customs duty concession available to Non Resident Indians transferring their residence from abroad to the country, an official said.
