Nod for 1:40 teacher-student ratio

July 11, 2018 12:00 am | Updated 04:05 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram

The government has issued orders that the teacher-student ratio be considered 1:40 for Classes 9 and 10 to protect high school teachers ‘thrown out’ in the staff fixation for 2018-19.

This is subject to some conditions. Government schools in one district will be taken as one unit and schools under one education agency will be treated as one for determining the ratio.

The 1:40 ratio can also be used to recall back to their parent school protected teachers who had been redeployed. Protected teachers should be accommodated in the next vacancy that arises in their category. No new appointments, on temporary basis or permanent, should be made in their category if these teachers are present. Subject ratio should be strictly followed.

The ratio will help protect language teachers too.
