Night patrolling stepped up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DEC. 24. The city police have stepped up night patrolling in view of the Christmas-New Year season. On Wednesday night, the patrols were mostly focussed around the main churches in the city where devotees were expected to attend the midnight mass in large numbers.

Meanwhile, the police are continuing the drive against drunken driving. According to the traffic police, more than 50 persons were booked on charges of drunken driving on Tuesday night.

A special bandobust scheme has been prepared for security on the Kovalam beach, the hub of New Year celebrations in the city. The police have been instructed to take stringent action in cases of drunken and riotous behaviour that result in disruption of public peace. An official said the police would not interfere with genuine revelry. However, driving after consuming alcohol, overspeeding, rash and negligent driving would be actively discouraged.
