THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The City Police have arrested Gopan, alias Mondi Gopan, who was convicted in two murder cases and was in hiding for a year after jumping parole.

A special squad of the City Police, headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Control Room) E. Sharafudeen, arrested Gopan, resident of Peyad, after a two-km chase in the Kulathupuzha forest.

The police said Gopan was staying with a woman near Vayankolai in the forest. On spotting the police, he ran into the forest. When the police gave chase, he tried to attack a constable, Harish, with a knife. The seven-member police team, however, managed to arrest him.

The police said Gopan confessed to committing over a dozen thefts during the past year. A motorcycle was recovered from his possession. The accused was produced in court and sent to the Central Jail, Poojappura.

Gopan was involved in a robbery at a private financial institution at Bakery Junction in 1998, the police said. He jumped parole while serving life term in two of the three murder cases at Venjaramoodu, Pathanapuram and Anchal. He is also an accused in over a dozen attempts to murder, theft, rape and several criminal cases.
