NEDUMBASSERY: A mock drill was conducted at the airport here on Saturday to assess the readiness of various agencies in handling situations such as emergency landings of aircraft.

Air India Express lent an aircraft for the drill.

Twenty-three people posed as passengers trapped in a simulated fire in the aircraft. Fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Rescue operations began with evacuation of passengers on stretchers.

They were carried to a temporary medical shelter set up under the guidance of the doctor on duty at the airport. Doctors and ambulance units from nine hospitals took part in the drill. The injured were rushed to hospitals.

CISF personnel form-ed a security ring and made arrangements for controlling air traffic. Local police took crowd-controlling measures and cleared the way for the swift passage of ambulances.

This is the third such drill being held at the airport in a month.

The drill lasted almost two hours. A meeting was held later to assess its effectiveness.
