`Mobile-phone towers not harmless'

KOLLAM: Sainudeen Pattazhy, president of Kerala Environmental Researchers' Association, has disputed the finding of a Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. study team that mobile-phone towers do not cause health problems. In a statement here on Monday, Dr. Pattazhi said Government agencies involved in regulating radio frequency radiations were yet to prove that the towers were harmless. According to a field study undertaken by the association, towers were being erected indiscriminately throughout the State, and in many places, more than three of them were present within half-a-kilometre radius. In Kollam taluk alone, there were more than 80 towers.

The studies showed that microwave radiation from these towers posed health problems. The towers had resulted in a good number of people contracting eye and sleep disorders.
