Ministry for fisheries sought

March 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The National Fishworkers Forum and the Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation are taking out a march to Parliament House in New Delhi on March 10 to protest the neglect of the fishermen community in the Union Budget.

Leaders of the two organisations said here on Friday that the march starting from Jantar Mantar would highlight the long-pending demands for a separate Ministry for fisheries and fishers’ welfare and a national policy of fisheries, withdrawal of the licence granted to foreign trawlers to operate in Indian waters and distribution of subsidised fuel for fishing vessels.

Fishers from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal would participate in the agitation.
