Minister instigating violence in island: MP

KOZHIKODE, JUNE 1. The Lakshadweep MP, P.P. Koya, has alleged that the Union Minister for Power, P.M. Sayeed's provocative speeches during his visit to the isles are leading to widespread arson and looting, street fights and mob violence in the Amini island in Lakshadweep.

In a statement here today, Dr. Koya said Mr. Sayeed was calling for revolt and revenge against those who voted against him. After hearing his speeches, some misguided youth went on the rampage on May 31. They set fire to several houses and hotels and attacked his opponents.

He alleged that several people, including a Sub-Inspector, were injured in the violence. Many of them were hospitalised. The police had to lob teargas shells and even resort to lathicharge to disperse the violent mob.

He said the authorities had clamped Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code on the island to control the situation.

Such large-scale violence and destruction were unheard of in Lakshadweep, Dr Koya said.

He urged the authorities to curb the activities of anti-social elements and order an impartial inquiry into the incidents in Amini island.
