March turns violent at Pananchery

THRISSUR, OCT 11. The police resorted to lathicharge when a march taken out by the Janakeeya Samithy at Pananchery, near here, on Monday turned violent.

An altercation between the parallel college students, Cheriyan and Sunip, and the driver and conductor of a private bus, Babu and Ramachandran, had triggered the problem, on October 8. The police said that Cheriyan and Sunip, on being denied student concession, had assaulted the driver and conductor. The students were arrested on October 9.

A Janakeeya Samithy had been formed in the Pananchery panchayat in protest against the arrest. The situation worsened when the private bus operators, on the Thrissur-Peechi route, went on strike. The students were later released from police custody and the bus operators withdrew their strike.

The Janakeeya Samithy, however, called a hartal for Monday. About 39 participants of the march, including the Youth Congress district secretary, Anto Augustine, were arrested this morning and taken to the Mannuthy police station. A large crowd gathered at the police station following the arrest and tension prevailed in the area. P P. George, MLA, visited the station and claimed to have apprised the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, of the developments.
