Nedumbassery: A mock exercise was carried out at the Cochin International Airport on Saturday morning to test the response of the National Security Guard-trained Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of the CISF posted here.

The exercise was confined to the CISF force in the airport in which 20 people — two civilians dressed as terrorists, 16 commandos and two CISF guards deployed outside the international terminal — participated.

The officials said the drill was conducted to review how well the commandos took cover and positioned themselves inside the terminal and identified strategic areas during a contingency. The drill lasted about 15 minutes and covered the passenger arrival hall, the air-side exit and the corridor to the departure hall.

The exercise started at 11.10 a.m. when two “terrorists”, armed with toy guns, stormed into the arrival side of the domestic terminal. The commandos, acting on a specific plan, surrounded the area from various angles and took positions to launch an assault. During this time, the two guards on duty outside moved closer, acting as supporting staff. The drill ended by 11.25 a.m. when the commandos overpowered the “terrorists”.

The whole exercise was monitored and reviewed by Rajiv Panth, CISF Commandant, who expressed satisfaction over the preparedness and reaction of the commandos.
