‘Media cannot follow security dictates’

TENHIPALAM: The job of the media is not to help the security personnel accomplish their duty but to inform the public, Yasin Ashraf, media analyst and associate editor of Madhyamam newspaper, has said.

Making a presentation at a seminar on ‘Covering terror’ organised by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism on the University of Calicut campus on Saturday, Dr. Ashraf said that mediapersons should not be deterred by security dictates.

Referring to the recent Mumbai terror attack, in which the media were accused of inadvertently helping terrorists, Dr. Ashraf said that Shivraj Patil, the then Home Minister, himself had compromised security by divulging vital information about commando movement.

Manoj K. Das, Kerala Editor of The New Indian Express, said thate media should be vigilant against infiltration of any terror elements. The media had the responsibility to protect the State’s peace. It was anchor-controlled reporting that took the news coverage of the recent Mumbai terror out of proportion.

V.S. Sasibhushanan Nair, former Head of the Department of Mass Communication, moderated the seminar.
