Thrissur: Poor Maveli! He was once stamped down to the netherworld. But the emperor was relieved to know he would get to visit his erstwhile subjects on earth once in a year during Onam.

This time too he arrived. Enquiring about the well-being of his subjects in Thrissur, he walked through the streets, only to realise the netherworld was perhaps better.

Skipping along the city roads, avoiding one pothole after another, Maveli landed in a huge crater.

When he cried for help, some crane operators came to his rescue. Drenched in muddy water, he was lifted to safety. These scenes were from a symbolic protest organised by activists of the Thrissur Archdiocese’s Kerala Catholic Youth Movement against the pathetic condition of city roads. Big craters in roads and by-lanes including, the Swaraj Round are a nightmare for motorists, especially two-wheeler riders. Accidents occur regularly. “If the condition of roads persists, Maveli may not visit us next year,” said Fr. Davis Panamkulam, KCYM director.
