Life imprisonment for murder accused

THODUPUZHA: The first accused in a case relating to the murder of a home nurse has been sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of Rs.10,000. Three people were accused in the case.

The Idukki District Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track-I) A.N. Janardhanan found Thankachan of Kannamthanam House at Mutton, near here, guilty of murdering Shymala, a home nurse of Pinnakkanad, in Kottayam district.

According to the prosecution, the murder was carried out in the night of November 28, 2000 at a rubber plantation at Perumattom, near Thodupuzha.

After the murder, the accused decamped with the victim's jewellery. The body of the victim was found in a canal nearby the next day.

The second and third accused in the case were given the benefit of doubt and set free.
