Leelavati gets Birla Fellowship

NEW DELHI, DEC. 6 . Malayalam writer M. Leelavati has been selected for the K.K. Birla Foundation Fellowship for 2004-05 in Comparative Indian Literature. C.N. Ramachandran is the recipient of the fellowship in Kannada.

The duration of the fellowships is one year. These carry a tax-free stipend of Rs.14,000 a month with a contingency grant of Rs.40,000 a year.

Dr. Leelavati is the retired Principal of a government (Brennen) college in Thalassery. Dr. Ramachandran is a writer.

Dr. Leelavati will take up the study of ``Women in ancient Indian literature (Sanskrit) and their depiction in Malayalam.'' Dr. Ramachandran will deal with ``Oral epics: oriental and Western - a comparative study,'' the foundation announced today. - UNI
