LDF, UDF candidates file papers for bypoll

Five candidates have filed their nominations so far

Both candidates are contesting for the first timeBJP candidate to file nomination on Friday

KOZHIKODE: The nominees of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) on Wednesday filed their nominations to contest the byelections from the Thiruvambadi Assembly segment in Kozhikode district.

George M. Thomas of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was the first to file his nominations before the Divisional Forest Officer Sravan Kumar Varma, who is the Retuning Officer, in his office. CPI (M) district secretary T.P.Ramakrishnan, CPI district secretary E.K. Vijayan, Koyilandy MLA P. Viswan, Koduvally MLA P.T.A. Rahim and CPI leader Sathyan Mokeri accompanied Mr. George.

V.M.Ummer, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) nominee, submitted his nomination papers in the afternoon.

In the morning, he visited IUML State president Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal in Malapuram to receive the deposit required for filing his nominations.

The former Minister M.K. Muneer, IUML leader P.K.K. Bava, Congress leader K.C. Abu and M. Veerankutty accompanied Mr. Ummer.

Both Mr. Thomas and Mr. Ummer, who are contesting the Assembly elections for the first time, also had an occasion to exchange pleasantries on Wednesday.

The CPI (M) candidate met Mr. Ummer when the former was coming out of the office of the returning officer after filing his nomination papers.

The dummy candidate of CPI (M), Jolly Joseph, also filed nominations on Wednesday. The byelection was necessitated by the demise of CPI (M) leader Mathai Chacko, who won from the constituency defeating IUML State committee member M.C.Mayin Haji in the April/May elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chose Giresh Thevally to contest the byelections slated for December 4. He will file his nominations on Friday.

Five candidates have so far filed their nominations.

Scrutiny on Saturday

The last date to file nominations is Friday. The scrutiny of nominations will be held on Saturday and the last date to withdraw nominations is Monday.
