KOCHI: V. R. Krishan Iyer, former judge of Supreme Court, is turning 90 on Tuesday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in message on the occasion said that Mr. Iyer is acclaimed in the country and outside as a legal luminary, eminent judge of the Supreme Court, an activist for the cause of human rights and above all an outstanding human being.

The message was sent to E.X. Joseph, secretary of the Krishna Menon Memorial Society, which had organised a celebration but had postponed the same because of the demise of former President K.R. Narayanan.

A message sent by Y.K. Sabharwal, Chief Justice of India, said that as a jurist, scholar and man of words, Justice Krishna Iyer changed the face of law and `discovered' the constitutional imperative for the protection of human rights to bring law to the rescue of the common man.

The society had planned to confer the Human Rights Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Iyer during the celebration.
