Kerala player’s plea not maintainable: Centre

Selection of women’s team for Asiad

The Central government submitted that the writ petition filed by Aparna Balan, a Kerala player, and another person regarding the selection of Indian women’s badminton team for the Indonesia Asian Games was not a maintainable one.

The petitioner approached the court seeking to issue a writ of mandamus directing the authorities concerned to include her in the second team for the women’s doubles event for the competition.

Govt contention

The Central government submitted that no part of the cause of action had arisen within the territorial jurisdiction of the Kerala High court for conferring the jurisdiction on the court.

The selection of the team was held at Hyderabad and the seat of the authority against which the relief to be sought was at New Delhi, it submitted. The petitioner, according to the Centre, ought to have moved the appropriate court for redressal of her grievance.

It also submitted that the petitioner had not sought any specific relief against the Central government.
