Karunakaran, Murali should quit UDF: KC (Secular)

KOCHI, MARCH 17. The Kerala Congress (Secular) working chairman, T. S. John, has said that the Congress leaders K. Karunakaran and K. Muraleedharan should leave the UDF and fight against the policies of the Oommen Chandy Government if they are sincere about their recent statements.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. John said that squabbles between the constituent parties of the UDF were leading to a stalemate in the administrative machinery of the State.

He said the Government's new liquor policy was protecting the interests of the abkari lobby and it should be opposed. The provisions included in the new policy like allotting beer parlours to three-star hotels and allotting the transfer of bar licences would lead to widespread corruption, he alleged.

The party would convene a meeting of paddy farmers at Thrissur on April 2, as part of the campaign to find a solution to the problems faced by paddy farmers. The campaign would be launched if their problems were not solved before March 31, Mr. John said.
