KOCHI: There is good news for researchers in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The Inter-University Centre For Astronomy And Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, has decided to establish its research centre at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat).

The Centre will come up at the Department Of Physics in Cusat that now functions as a reference centre of the IUCAA. The Inter University Centre is an autonomous institution set up by the Universities Grants Commission (UGC) to promote groups in Astronomy and Astrophysics in Indian universities. The Inter-University Centre aims at being a centre for excellence within the university sector for teaching, research and development in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The Cusat will also be involved in the Rs. one crore nationwide project for promoting research in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Cusat is among the three universities in the Country selected for the project. The other universities are in Raipur and West Bengal.

The decision to establish a research centre at the Department of Physics in Cusat was taken at the users' meeting of IUCAA held at Pune last Monday. Cusat Vice-Chancellor, P. K. Abdul Azis, attended the meeting.

"It is a big push for the university to strengthen academic and research work in Astronomy and Astrophysics," he said about the IUCAA's decision. "The centre will now become a focal point for teachers, researchers and students interested in various studies in both the fields."

Dr. Azis had talks with N. K. Badhich, Director and chairperson of the users' committee, and A. K. Kembhavi, Convenor, Academic Affairs, IUCAA. From now on, the research centre at the Department of Physics will receive more support for initiating projects on Astrophysics and Astronomy. Teachers and students are already using the facilities available at the reference centre in the Department.
