`Irresponsible comments bane of social life'

THRISSUR, JULY 24. Irresponsible comments about people, especially those who are no more, are the bane of social life, T.V. Echara Warrier, father of P. Rajan, an engineering college student who had died in police custody during the Emergency, has said.

Prof. Warrier was speaking at the release of `Madakka Yathrayude Madhuram', a novel written by S. Rajaram, Rajan's fellow student at the Kozhikode Regional Engineering College, here on Saturday.

``You should not speak about someone you do not know,'' Prof. Warrier said, in a veiled reference to the former KTDC chairperson and Congress leader, Padmaja Venugopal's controversial remarks about Rajan.

Mr. Rajaram remembered Rajan as a ``sensitive person with great love of music''.

``He was a talented singer and guitarist. He had set to tune some of the lyrics I wrote. We have never talked about grave social issues, but I knew he was politically aware. My generation woke up to social and political realities with the Rajan incident. We understood that it was time to shake off our complacency,'' Mr. Rajaram said.

The first part of the novel, focussing on global cultural renaissance, is told in the form of a letter to Rajan.

C.R. Omanakuttan and C.V. Sreeraman, writers, also spoke.
