`Idol vandalised to create communal tension'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 7 . The Rural police suspected that miscreants with the motive of creating communal dispute had damaged the idol of Sree Narayana Guru installed at Palotuvila in the Malayankeezhu police station limits in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Circle Inspector (Kattakada), A. S. Sivaprasad, said the police could not see any other "immediate motive" for the attack on the idol installed in front of the SNDP branch office. The incident was reported at 1-30 a.m. on Wednesday. The area has no history of any communal tension. However, the police are also probing whether the recent CPI(M)-Shiv Sena stand-off in the area had any bearing on the attack on the idol.

Fingerprint experts examined the scene of crime on Thursday. But no prints could be lifted from the spot. The miscreants had thrown stones at the houses of a CPI(M) and Shiv Sena worker. The Malayankeezhu police have registered a case of attempt to create communal disharmony under Section 153 (a) of the Indian Penal Code.
