`I' group leaders for splitting Congress

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 11. The district-level leaders of the `I' group in the Congress are for splitting the party. Most of the district leaders who met the senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran expressed this opinion with vehemence. The leaders, mostly those presiding over the coordination committees set up recently, felt that there was no place for them in the party and it was better to quit and probe the possibilities of forging an alternative United Democratic Front by bringing together dissatisfied coalition partners.

Mr. Karunakaran did not express his opinion, and preferred to gather information about the grassroots mood of the `I' faction supporters.
