High Court directive to Corporation

KOCHI, NOV. 29. A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has directed the Kochi Corporation to take steps to comply with a High Court directive for conducting an independent inquiry into the allegations of irregularities in the award of contract for cleaning up the Rameswaram-Mandra-Kalvathi Canal in Mattancherry .

The directive was issued when a contempt petition filed by K. Prabhakaran, secretary, Swasraya Mattancherry, came up for hearing today. The court also directed the Corporation Secretary to appear in person on December 10 when the petition would be take up for further hearing.

The court had order an inquiry on a petition filed by the Swasraya Mattancherry. When the contempt petition came up, the court noted that it was filed in June 2004. The Corporation Secretary knew that contempt proceedings had initiated against him. In spite of that, he had kept quiet and had not taken effective steps to ensure compliance with the court order.
