Helmet: Govt. mulling over exemption

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Sept. 26. The Government is learnt to be thinking of granting some form of exemption to those riding pillion on two-wheelers in the State from wearing helmets, which has been made mandatory for all travelling on two-wheelers. Highly placed sources said a decision has to be taken at the `political-level' as Section 129 of the Motor Vehicle Act, which makes helmets mandatory, empowers only the State Government to grant any form of exemption from wearing protective headgear.

The full Bench of the High Court while confirming the helmet rule yesterday, had asked petitioners to approach the Government for an exemption when it was pointed out that protective headgear for children was not available in the market.
