LDF, UDF call hartal in Varkala today

Unruly scenes in council meeting

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Varkala on Thursday.

Unruly scenes unfolded at Wednesday’s municipal council meeting, which saw the ruling front and Opposition councillors clash over illegal constructions on the Papanasam beach. When the issue came up for discussion, the Opposition alleged that the ruling front was facilitating the constructions, and taking no steps to curb it despite detection of irregularities.

Opposition members alleged that chairperson Bindu Haridas’s reply on the matter was inadequate, and reached the well of the house to protest.

Hospitalised

The ruling front councillors and those of the Opposition then clashed, and blocked the chairperson and the secretary. Pandemonium erupted then, and the police reached the spot.

Following uneasiness, chairperson Bindu Haridas and Opposition leader Jayasree were admitted to the taluk hospital. Ms. Haridas injured her hand in the melee.

The LDF moved a resolution to take action against councillor Prasad S., who is out on bail on a complaint of exhibitionism, and this was not opposed by the Opposition. The councillor, who had reached the meeting, left soon after.
