THRISSUR: Over 4,500 delegates from different parts of the country are expected to attend the 49th annual congress of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) to be held in Kochi on January 5 and 6.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the organising committee office-bearers said that with a membership of 18,000 gynaecologists drawn from the 190-odd local societies spread across the country, FOGSI is the biggest organisation of gynaecologists in the world. This is the first annual congress of the FOGSI to be held in Kerala. About 45 foreign delegates from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Australia, the Philippines, Singapore and Switzerland are also likely to attend the meeting.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Bill Gates Foundation as well as the Central and State Governments support the congress.

The six workshops and five interactive seminars to be held on January 5 as part of the Congress will help the delegates to gain an in-depth knowledge on surgical procedures from the foreign experts.

Exhibitions will also form part of the congress.

Some of the themes to be discussed at the congress will be maternal mortality and new drugs in obstetrics and gynaecology.
