Greens cry foul at draft notification

Environmental activists have taken a serious note of the draft notification issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests on the report of the High Level Working Group on Western Ghats chaired by K. Kasturirangan.

Any move to weaken the notification of November 13, 2013 would amount to strengthening the hands of those who stand for plundering the natural wealth of the Western Ghats, according to John Peruvanthanam and M.G. Santhoshkumar, president and convener of the Western Ghats Conservation Coordination Committee, respectively. They were participating in a press conference.

Quarry mafia

The decision of the State government to redraw the contours of the Ecologically Sensitive Areas would give away more than 50,000 ha of forestland to the corporates, they said. Alleging that the government was going out of its way to accommodate the interests of the quarry mafia, they called for a CBI inquiry into the corruption in sanctioning quarries in the State.

Mr. John said there were over 8,000 unauthorised quarries in the State.
