Govt. to fix routes for stage carriers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 13. In a bid to provide hassle-free travelling all over the State, the Government has decided to fix the bus routes for granting permits to operate stage carriers as per the powers vested with it under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

The State Transport Commissioner, K.P. Somarajan, said bus permits were now being issued to bus owners according to their choice and most of the bus owners prefer profit-making routes. As a result, remote areas in the State lack sufficient bus schedules putting commuters to a lot of hardships.

The Government has sought the opinion of peoples' representatives, local bodies, organisations and the public before fixing the bus routes and granting the bus permits.

According to the State Transport Commissioner, the routes being proposed should have roads for buses to operate buses safely. Routes should be proposed linking areas that do not have commuting facilities. New routes linking existing bus routes can also be suggested.

The starting point and final destination and the route through which the bus would pass along with a sketch of the duration of the route should be enclosed. The details of the bus routes confined to the district should be send to the respective Regional Transport Authority Secretary. In case of inter-district routes, the details should be forwarded to the Secretary, State Transport Authority, Transport Bhavan, East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram-23.

More details can be had from the respective Regional Transport Offices and the proposals should reach the concerned offices before 5 p.m on November 30 directly or through post.
