Government sanction for first phase of EcoCity Project

KOTTAYAM: The Government has accorded sanction for the implementation of the Comprehensive Eco Conservation Project under the 'EcoCity Project.'

Kottayam municipal area and the adjoining panchayats of Arpookara, Aymanom, Kumarakom, Kumaranallore, Nattakom, Manarcadu, Thiruvarpu and Vijayapuram would come under the project area.

While the various sub-projects have been prioritised for implementation, one that is on the top of the agenda is the proposed garbage disposal project, the District Collector, Rani George.

The implementation of various demonstration projects which are to be implemented by the

Central Pollution Control Board and Kottayam municipality would be expedited, she said. A special project would be implemented for the conservation of the Vembanad lake area.

The Comprehensive Eco Conservation Project envisages various sub-projects aimed at the development of the water transport system in the area as also local surface transport system. It also hopes to develop many of the junctions that remain congested today.

The project plans to make use of the existing junkyard at Vadavathoor for setting up a waste disposal plant for the municipal area. This would be implemented with financial assistance from 'Clean Kerala Mission' which is expected to provide Rs. 50 lakhs for the project.

The waste disposal projects at the panchayat-level would be finalised in consultation with respective local body, Ms George said. Two of the major demonstration projects were development of Mundar river and modernisation of the Kacheri Kadavu boat jetty. The Mundar project is being taken up at a cost of Rs. 71 lakhs, while the boat jetty project would cost Rs. 72.70 lakhs.
