Garbage dump row: meet inconclusive

A meeting convened by District Collector Anand Singh here on Sunday to find a solution to garbage disposal problems of Thalassery municipality was inconclusive as representatives of local action committees abstained from the meeting. The meeting was called in the wake of agitation by people of Pettippalam in the New Mahe panchayat against the municipality's landfill.

The meeting attended by Thalassery MLA and former Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan decided to hold another meeting of representatives of the action committees at Thalassery at 2 p.m. on November 8. The residents have been demanding that the municipality's garbage dump be shifted from their locality. Protestors had stopped garbage vehicles from entering the dump.

The Collector told The Hindu that there was a broad consensus in the meeting that the municipality should reduce the quantity of garbage being dumped at the landfill from 24 tonne a day to 15-16 tonne. He said the participants in the meeting, including members of the panchayat, were assured that steps would be taken by the municipality to set up a biogas plant estimated at Rs.2.5 crore. The plant would be completed in six months, Mr. Singh said.
