Gandhian K.E. Mammen celebrates 93rd birthday

It was a memorable birthday for freedom fighter and Gandhian K.E. Mammen, who turned 93, as a steady flow of visitors, including Speaker G. Karthikeyan, Ministers, other political personalities, and schoolchildren turned up to wish him here even as age-related ailments restricted his movements.

Mr. Karthikeyan, who was among the first to reach the Gandhian’s home at Kunnukuzhy, said Mr. Mammen was a living example that the principles of Mahatma Gandhi could be imbibed in every sphere of one’s life, no matter whatever challenges society threw up.

Mr. Mammen had lived his entire life as a Gandhian, and was striving to spread the movement initiated by the Mahatma.

Mr. Mammen, who appreciated the Speaker’s initiative to plant 125 saplings in the State Assembly complex, said he would soon send across a sapling from his side.

Mr. Karthikeyan assured him that the sapling would be planted in a prominent spot and taken good care of.

Children visit

The day only got brighter for the freedom fighter when a group of children from the Nirmala Bhavan School, Kowdiar, led by Minister for Youth Affairs P.K. Jayalakshmi, visited him as part of a celebration organised by the Centre for Gandhian Studies of the University of Kerala.

Patriotic songs, felicitations, and distribution of ‘payasam’ followed. Former Minister M.A. Baby, Communist Party of India State unit Secretary Pannian Ravindran, and CPI(M) district unit secretary Kadakampally Surendran were among those who called on Mr. Mammen.
