Financial firms told not to employ gangs

KOLLAM, JULY 24. The Director General of Police (DGP), P.K. Hormese Tharakan, has said that financial institutions leasing money to the public for hire purchase have been issued strict orders not to employ gangs for taking possession of any property in the event of dues.

Talking to presspersons here today, he said the decision has been taken in view of numerous complaints that the so-called gangs were maturing into criminal gangs. Last week, representatives of financial institutions were summoned for an ad hoc meeting at the police headquarters following which they had been instructed to use the services of their respective employees only for the purpose of taking possession of any property. Such employees should have their names registered with the nearest police station and an identity card issued from the police, he said.

Financial institutions have the prerogative to take possession of properties in the event of dues. But the new conditions should be strictly adhered to, he said.

People-friendly policing

The DGP said that his department was in the process of creating awareness among the public aimed at getting rid of the general fear of police stations.

As part of the move, a system of the police going to the public through a community policing system had already been introduced and was found to be successful in the capital city, he said.

Under the same programme, a category of better service police stations through a scientific process under the guidance of the Administrative Staff College, Hyderabad, would come into existence in the State soon.

As many as 57 police stations have been earmarked for the purpose under the Modernisation of Government Programme (MGP) and each district would have a minimum of three such police stations.

Media help sought

The DGP said that while the media in general was prompt in highlighting the weak aspects of the police, the achievements made by the police were sidelined. Mr. Tharakan said that several sensational cases had been solved or major breakthrough had been achieved.
