Excise officials directed to check illicit liquor trade

PATHANAMTHITTA Nov. 13. The District Collector, Rabeendra Kumar Agarwal, has directed the Excise Department to take strong measures to check illicit liquor trade in the district, especially during the Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrim season that begins on November 17.

The Collector was addressing a meeting to review the prohibition enforcement in the district, at the Collectorate conference hall today.

Mr. Agarwal said the Excise Department should intensify its surprise inspections of toddy and IMFL outlets and carry out more raids against suspected hooch dens at different places in the district.

He directed the Excise Department to ensure that toddy shops and IMFL outlets function as per the stipulated guidelines of the Government.

The Assistant Excise Commissioner, Venugopal, said that the department had conducted 3,696 raids and registered 135 cases at different parts in the district in addition to 68 joint Excise-Police raids during the period from August 7 to November 9.

He said that 621 litres of arrack, 837 litres of illicit spirit and 60 litres of illicit Indian-made foreign liquor were seized in these raids. Moreover, 38,000 litres of wash had been destroyed.

The District Superintendent of Police, Dinendra Kashyap, also attended the meeting.
