THRISSUR: The Town East police on Monday arrested an Excise official, A.J. Joy, on charges of trespassing and masquerading under Sections 447 and 419 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Town East circle inspector Shahul Hameed said that Joy had posed as a reporter of an evening daily and attended a press conference at the Thrissur Press Club, in which P.R. Jacob, a representative of the Anti-Corruption People's Forum (Azhimathy Virudha Janakeeya Munnani), levelled corruption charges against Excise officials.

When mediapersons asked him to reveal his identity, Joy ran away from the Press Club and entered the office of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. A few journalists followed him.

In the Vigilance Bureau, Jason Chamavalappil, reporter of Surya TV and vice-president of the Thrissur unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists, was allegedly manhandled.

He has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here.

Journalists later staged a dharna in front of the Vigilance Bureau and submitted a complaint to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, director general of police and the Thrissur superintendent of police.

The Vigilance Bureau submitted a complaint to the police that journalists had "intruded into the Bureau.''
