CHERUTHURUTHI: Governor R.L. Bhatia has said the proposal to make the Kerala Kalamandalam a cultural university will help hasten its development and elevate its status in the country.

He was inaugurating the concluding session of the `Sangeethika' cultural festival organised to mark the beginning of the year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Kalamandalam here on Thursday.

Pointing out that the proposal is under the active consideration of the Government, the Governor said MLAs could collectively pursue the proposal to make it into a reality.

The Governor said that ``if Kathakali and Mohiniyattom have earned international fame, full credit should go to the Kerala Kalamandalam and its illustrious founding-father Mahakavi

Vallathol Narayana Menon. A poet of the highest order, Vallathol took upon himself the task of preserving and promoting Kathakali by establishing a temple of learning, where it could be taught and trained in the old Gurukula system.

``Any institution, if it is to flourish, will have to absorb new trends and traits from beyond its confines. This is more so in the case of those who deal with art instruction. Moreover, we have to keep our doors and windows open for light and fresh air of ideas to enter from every direction. Kerala Kalamandalam, I am sure, has adapted itself to the changing times, but without compromising its classical moorings,'' the Governor said.

K. Radhakrishnan and T.N. Prathapan, MLAs; Kalamandalam chairman Prabodhachandran Nayar; and secretary Balachandran Vadakkedath; spoke on the occasion.
