DYFI, IUML marches turn violent

KANNUR, NOV. 29. A tense situation prevailed here this evening when a march taken out by the DYFI in protest against the reception to the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty by the IUML district committee.

Tension broke out in the evening when the DYFI activists hurled stones at vehicles carrying IUML workers for the function. The police fired 10 rounds of teargas shells and exploded three smoke bombs to disperse the DYFI workers near the Caltex Junction here in the evening.

Trouble erupted when the protestors smashed windscreens of a bus and three lorries near the KSRTC bus stand. The protestors carrying an effigy of the Minister began the march from the DYFI Youth Centre here. They burnt the Minister in effigy near the bus stand. The protestors dispersed when a large posse of police personnel reached the spot.

As the police chased away the protesting DYFI workers, groups of irate IUML workers shouting slogans against the CPI(M) and the DYFI rushed towards the Stadium Corner, the venue of the IUML function.

They hurled stones at vehicles and shops. The building that housed the office Madhyamam daily here also came under attack.

Earlier, the DYFI workers hurled stones at IUML workers near the municipal bus stand. They also destroyed a cutout of the Minister.

A constable attached to the State Special Branch, Balakrishnan, was injured in the stone pelting.

A large number of IUML activists gathered at the Stadium Corner waiting for the Minister. The Minister, according to IUML leaders here, would attend the meeting late tonight. The reception function began at 7 p.m.
