The Additional District Magistrate H. Salimraj has directed the Keltron as well as the Eram Scientific Solutions Limited that had installed e-toilets in different parts of the district to ensure trouble-free functioning of all the 27 e-toilets in the district in the next one week itself.
The ADM, leading a team comprising Babu George, former District Panchayat president; P. N. Madhusoodhanan, Sanitation Mission district co-ordinator; Prasanth R. Nair of the private company, and Chinchu Prasad, Keltron representative, had inspected all the 27 e-toilets installed in the district on Saturday following complaints of certain technical snags at various toilets.
17 functioning
The team had found 17 of the 27 e-toilets functioning well and certain technical problems with the remaining 10 toilets.
Mr. Salimraj has directed Keltron authorities to rectify the defects and make all the toilets operational before April 15.
District Collector V. N. Jithendran, will be convening an official meeting to review the performance of e-toilets on April 15, he said.
‘Connected e-toilet’
The District Panchayat had installed 27 e-toilets in different parts of the district as part of its innovative ‘Connected e-toilet’ project under its ‘Zero Waste Pathanamthitta’ programme a few months ago.
The project was aimed at ensuring total sanitation and effective waste management in a phased manner, said Mr. George.
According to him, people are forced to attend the nature’s call on the wayside and at various other open public places due to the absence of proper toilet facility.
The District panchayat had also deployed two mobile sanitary wagons in two grama panchayats in an effort to check open defecation.
10 toilets each
He said the panchayat had got the inspiration to deploy the mobile sanitary wagons, with 10 toilets each in it, first at the base camps of the Sabarimala pilgrims at Pandalam and Perinad during the previous Sabarimala pilgrim season. Mr. George said the State Sanitation Mission was the implementing agency of the project and the respective grama panchayat was responsible for proper upkeep and maintenance of the sanitary wagons.
Good feedback
He said the panchayat has been getting very good feedback from the users of the e-toilets put up at the District Hospital premises at Kozhencherry.
