CPI(M) to stage dharna

PATHANAMTHITTA, MARCH 3. The CPI(M) district committee here plans to stage a dharna before the Civil Station on March 10 by the members of various local bodies and co-operative societies demanding steps to resolve the drinking water crisis in the district.

In a statement issued here today, the CPI(M) district secretary, K. Ananthagopan, called upon the Government to take steps to commission various drinking water supply schemes launched by the Kerala Water Authority in the district on a war-footing basis.

The CPI(M) district committee presided over by K. P. Udayabhanu maintained that the drought situation in the district was worse than that of 1983.

With the drying up of rivers, streams and wells, people have to carry potable water from distant places in many parts of the district. The Government is yet to come out with any effective scheme to help the affected people, Mr. Ananthagopan alleged.

He called upon the district authorities to take immediate steps to supply drinking water in tanker lorries to the water scarce areas.

The CPI(M) leader alleged that the fund allocation for the district to meet the crisis was much less compared to other districts.
