The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has directed the District Collector and the District Police Chief (DPC) to submit to it facts and information on the action taken on the allegations of Dalit autorickshaw driver E. Chithralekha within three days of receipt of its notice.
The direction of the NCSC was a follow-up of its earlier notice to the officials last month referring to Ms. Chithralekha’s complaint in April following the present State government’s order cancelling the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s allotment of five cents of land at Kattampally to her on the ground that she owned a plot at her native village near Payyannur.
The UDF government had allotted the land following her round-the-clock dharna in front of the Collectorate for weeks demanding protection for her life and property following torching of her autorickshaw, intimidation and insults, allegedly by local workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
The latest notice said they should submit the action taken report to the commission. The commission decided to investigate the matter in pursuance of the powers conferred on it under Article 338 of the Constitution.
