Classical music appreciation programme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 31. An Indian classical music appreciation programme will be held at the Vailoppilli Samskrithi Bhavan at Nalanda here on November 9 and 10 by The Hindu-Young World as part of its Newspaper in Education programme.

The programme aims at introducing the features of Indian classical music in a simple and innovative manner. Live performances, discussions and multimedia presentations will be interspersed with the playing of select recordings of masters.

One day would be devoted to Hindustani music and the other to Carnatic. The Hindustani segment will be led by Basavi Mukherji, exponent of the Gwalior gharana and reader at the Department of Music, Santiniketan. The presentation would be followed, in the evening, by a full-fledged concert by the vocalist, accompanied by Shakti Pratap Chakravarthy on the tabla.

The Carnatic segment, on the second day, will be led by J. Sreevalsan Menon. The veteran vocalist, Neyyatinkara Vasudevan, will be the chief guest at the valedictory function. The meeting will be followed by his concert, accompanied by Babunarayan on the violin, Sundaresan on the mridangam and Thripunithura Radhakrishnan on the ghatom.

Students from classes eight to 12 and college students may take part in the programme. Those who wish to participate should register their names with the coordinator, The Hindu-Young World (telephone number: 353555). There is no participation fee.
