Hundreds throng Puthenkavil Bhagavathy Temple to witness ritual

PATHANAMTHITTA: Hundreds of devotees thronged the Puthenkavil Bhagavathy Temple to witness the Chooral Adavi ritual that was held as part of the annual Padayani festival on Friday evening.

The Chooral Adavi was held on the ninth day of the 13-day annual Padayani festival at the temple. The Chooral Adavi is reminiscent of the Narabali ritual of yore, said the temple authorities.

Over 1,000 devotees participated in the ritual. The devotees rolled on the ground in front of the temple with thorny canes wrapped around their bodies.

The ritual began at 11.30 p.m. on Friday and concluded by 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, said M. Vinu, president, Kurampala Padayani Kalari.

Naayattu Padyani will be held on Sunday and the Kalam Kolam performance on Monday, said Mr. Vinu.

The festival will conclude with the Bhairavi Kolam performance on Tuesday. Temple Tantri Kantaru Rajeevaru will perform a Kalasabhishekom at the temple on March 28.
