Change in design of flyover sought

KOCHI, OCT. 11. The Council of Residents' Associations, Vytilla (CRAV) has urged the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) to change the design for the proposed flyover at Vytilla Junction.

According to the design forwarded by the Authority to the State Government, the flyover would come on Thripunithura-Sahodaran Ayyappan Road. The Council representatives point out that this would require the merchants at Vytilla Junction to shift.

The land acquisition and rehabilitation process would only delay the completion of the project. On the other hand, if the same were constructed along the National Highway, the existing facilities at Vytilla would not be affected.

The GCDA had mooted the suggestion to construct flyovers at Kundanoor, Vytilla, Pipeline Junction and Edappally along with the City Centre flyover, which starts from Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium and ends at the High Court junction, as vital steps in solving traffic problems.

However, it would take up any new project only after discussions with Hudco officials on settling the Authority's outstanding dues, said the GCDA chairman, Antony Isaac.

The GCDA team comprising Prof. Isaac and the GCDA secretary, P. Satyaraj, would leave for New Delhi on Tuesday.

In a communication addressed to the representatives of the resident associations council, the Authority has said that projects for the flyover costing Rs.14 crores, construction of a bus terminal at Vytilla costing Rs.16 crores and a water sports centre at Chilavanoor costing Rs.5.5 crores have been prepared.

Bus terminal

There have been complaints that the shifting of the bus terminal to Vytilla would lead to increase in crime in the region. However, CRAV representatives pointed out that chances for this were minimal as Vytilla is already in an advanced phase of development. Also, there is a pending proposal for having a new police station there, said K.G. Ramachandran Nair, president, and P.K. Gopalakrishnan, general secretary of the CRAV.

The demand for shifting the bus terminal from Kaloor to Vytilla has been welcomed by local agencies as well. A press release issued by the Janakeeya Samiti president, Francis Manjooran, said that a mass petition would be filed for the same in association with the Vytilla unit of the Vyapari-Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti and residents' associations.
