Chandy to inaugurate work on fishing harbour

ALAPPUZHA, NOV. 29. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, will inaugurate the construction work of the Thottappally fishing harbour at 11 a.m. on December 4.

The Ambalappuzha MLA, D. Sugathan, said here today that the estimated cost of construction of the fishing harbour was Rs.14. 86 crores. The Central Government will provide half of the estimated cost. It has already provided crore.

As part of the harbour, two breakwater walls, one 410 metres long and the other 120 metres, will be constructed. The harbour will have a 60-metre-long jetty, auction halls, a water distribution system and drainage facilities. It is expected that 19 fishing villages in the district will get the benefit of the harbour. As many as 1,000 country boats and 100 motorised boats will be able to operate from the harbour.

Mr. Sugathan said the Thottappally harbour would be of great importance in future as it there was no fishing harbours between Kayamkulam and Kochi.

The work is expected to be complete in two years. The process of tendering has been completed.

The Fisheries Minister, Dominic Presentation, will preside over the function. The Alappuzha MP, K.S. Manoj, will deliver the key-note address.
