Achuthanandan alleges `looting' at airport

KARIPUR: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has demanded the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to put an end to the alleged mafia-authorities nexus at Karipur Airport here. The Ministry of Civil Aviation should intervene and investigate the `mafia activities' at the airport, he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan was inaugurating a march taken out to the airport by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) here on Friday in protest against the alleged "looting of the Gulf passengers."

He said several crores of rupees had been looted from the passengers. "The State Government will do nothing to help the passengers, because it acts in collusion with the mafia groups that reign at the airport," he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that even Haj pilgrims were not spared by the Customs and Emigration officers at the airport.

He demanded Karipur Airport be given international. He said none, including the State Government, had taken any interest to secure international status for the airport. "The Government will not take any interest, because if made international, the checking will be made stricter at the airport," he said.

Several thousands of men and women had taken part in the march. The police blocked the march about 500 metres away from the airport.

Among those who addressed the march were T.K. Hamza, MP; P. Satidevi, MP; Manjalamkuzhi Ali, MLA; and K. Saidalikutty, district secretary of the CPI(M). A. Sivadasan, district secretary of the DYFI, welcomed the gathering. V.P. Anil Kumar, DYFI treasurer, presided over the function.
