Cardamom auction fetches Rs.4 lakhs

KOZHIKODE, OCT. 11. As much as 1,394.9 kg of cardamom worth Rs.4 lakhs was auctioned at the agricultural wholesale market in Vengeri here today.

The average price of one kg of cardamom was Rs.301. The highest bid was for Rs.400 a kg and the lowest Rs.164.

The auction is held every Monday, this being the sixth during the season.

A total of 12,555.9 kg of cardamom has been auctioned at the market this year.

The cardamom season which tapers off in April is buoyant since September. The auctioning during this season began on September 9.

The arrivals are mainly from Wayanad, and a moderate quantity comes from outside the State.

Trial trading in vegetables is being carried out at the market. Trading in coconut and flowers (anthuriums) is also on.
