Bus Day observed in Kochi

Aimed at encouraging people to use the public-transport system, the KSRTC plans to organise ‘Bus Days' in each district, Transport Minister V. S. Sivakumar has said.

Speaking at Fort Kochi on Tuesday after inaugurating the Bus Day celebrations in Ernakulam district, he said that the RTC would modernize its fleet, so that it can offer better service to commuters. Referring to KSRTC services, Mr. Sivakumar said that there is an urgent need to reduce losses and help the Corporation achieve a break-even stage. He travelled from Thopumpady to Fort Kochi by a AC bus and returned by a private bus.

Many private buses were decked up with decorations, balloons and plantain trees. They also had stickers exhorting people to utilize public transport. People must change their mindset towards public transport, said Mayor Tony Chammany. Vivek Mathai George of Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) said that the third Wednesday of each month would be observed as bus day in different routes. The bus day was organised by among others CPPR and the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry with support from the district administration.
