Demand for action against Secretary

KOZHIKODE: Local people on Thursday staged a blockade of Ayyancherry grama panchayat Secretary Sasidharan Pillai at his office demanding action against the Secretary for allegedly swindling off panchayat fund worth Rs.6 lakhs. The allegation against the Secretary was that he had withdrawn money from the accounts of the panchayat in the branches of KDC Bank and South Malabar Gramin Bank on November 25 and 29 last under the Sampoorn Gramin Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) fund - Staff Reporter

Kodiyeri gives notice for private Bill

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has given notice for a private Bill to amend university laws to conduct the college union elections on time, overcoming court orders to the Legislature Secretary. The Bill seeks to introduce a new chapter - 7 A - in four laws governing the universities to make it binding on the principals to conduct the college union elections in Government, aided and self-financing colleges on the dates to be fixed by the universities. It will also contain a provision to empower the universities to take action against errant managements. - Special Correspondent

Minister's promise on quota benefits

ALAPPUZHA: Talks being held between the Government and social organisations on the findings of the Narendran Commission were not aimed at getting approval to take steps to ensure representation for Backward Communities in the State civil services, Fisheries Minister Dominic Presentation said here on Friday. Inaugurating the three-day annual assembly of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council at the Alappuzha Pastoral Centre, he said backward communities had the right to get their share of jobs in Government services. Mr. Presentation said the Government would take steps to fill the backlog of vacancies that were due to backward communities through an executive order within a month. - Staff Reporter

RSS to observe flag day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will observe Makara Sankranthi on Saturday as flag day in connection with the Rashtra Raksha Sangamam being organised by it here on Republic Day.
