Decision on cultural university soon

THRISSUR: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that a final decision on starting the proposed cultural university in the State will be announced before November 1. The Chief Minister announced this after presenting the Pallavur Appu Marar Award to the renowned percussionist Kuzhur Narayanan Nair at Chalakkudy on Thursday.

Mr. Chandy said the decision on the proposed university was getting delayed mainly because of the financial implications involved. Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan and Minister for Cultural Affairs A.P. Anil Kumar were also present on the occasion. The award instituted by the State Government for the best percussionist carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, sculpture and a citation. — Staff Reporter

Chandy to convene conference

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will convene a conference of chief executives of various airlines operating flights to Gulf countries on August 29. The conference is to discuss the difficulties faced by the passengers on account of shortage of flights to the Gulf countries during the Onam season and plans for operation of additional flights. — Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.L. Bhatia on Thursday mourned the death of freedom fighter and social activist Jubba Ramakrishna Pillai.

"I am profoundly saddened at the demise of Jubba Ramakrishana Pillai. A popular Gandhian all his life, he was in the forefront for the propagation of the khadi and the fight against untouchability."

BJP State president P. S. Sreedharan Pillai remembered that Ramakrishna Pillai was in the forefront of the fight for social justice.

LDF workers lay siege to taluk offices

PATHANAMTHITTA: LDF workers laid siege to the taluk offices in the district on Thursday, protesting against the anti-people policies of the UDF Government. Raju Abraham, MLA, inaugurated the blockade in Pathanamthitta while the CPI district secretary Mundappally Thomas inaugurated the siege in Adoor this forenoon. The LDF district convener Mathew T. Thomas, the Idukki MP, Francis George and the Kerala Congress (Secular) State general secretary Jacob Thomas Arikupuram inaugurated the blockade of the taluk offices in Ranni, Thiruvalla and Mallappally.— Staff Reporter

Man hacked to death

THRISSUR: A 30-year-old man was hacked to death by a three-member gang at Vettukad in the district on Thursday afternoon. The police said the deceased had been identified as Chirayath Jose Nixon. According to the police, Nixon was an accused in several cases including murder case. Gang rivalry appeared to be the motive for the murder.
