Training camp

MALAPPURAM: The District Trauma Care will organise a training camp for its volunteers at the Government Hospital, Kottappady, on Sunday. The daylong camp will be guided by experts from the police, medical and transport departments, said trauma care officials here on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Face-to-face planned

KASARAGOD: Th The District Collector and Superintendent of Police will hold mass contact programmes at Hosdurg and Kasaragod as part of the State Government's year-long action plan for quick disposal of files and grievances. The face-to-face at Kasaragod will be held at the Collectorate conference hall on June 11 and that in Hosdurg will be held at the Hosdurg taluk office on June 19. — Staff Reporter

Plea for interim relief

KOLLAM: The State secretariat member of the Kerala NGO Association Poovattur Ravi has called upon the State Government to immediately sanction Rs.750 for each Government employee as interim relief. Vasthu Vidya course

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam (VVG) has invited applications for its one-year diploma course (correspondence) in traditional architecture. According to a statement issued by the executive director of Gurukulam, P.N. Suresh, the minimum qualification for eligibility is a degree in any discipline. Those who have passed polytechnic diploma course in civil engineering or architecture are also eligible to apply. Application forms are available at Gurukulam office on payment of Rs.50 by postal order favouring, the Executive Director, Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam, Aranmula - 689533. Fellowship awarded

KOTTAYAM: Varghese P. Punnose, Professor of psychiatry, Medical College, Alappuzha, has been awarded the International Fellowship for Young Psychiatrists, instituted by the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). He is the first Keralite to win the fellowship, said a press release from the Indian Psychiatric Society.

Dr. Punnose will attend the World Psychiatric Congress scheduled to be held from September 10 to 15 in Cairo, Egypt. — Staff Reporter

Survey report to be released

KOTTAYAM: The Minister for Forests, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, will release the report of the Vembanad Water Fowl Survey-2005, conducted during January this year, here on Sunday.

A seminar on Vembanad conservation has also been organised in connection with the ceremony.

Photography contest winners

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sali Palode has won the first prize and R. Sasidhar the second in the `Nature' category of the National Photography Competition organised by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (SDCSTE) in connection with the World Environment Day celebration 2005. The first prize in the `Green City' category went to Bhoopesh Little and the second prize to K.C. Joseph. The Chief Minister will distribute the awards and certificates tomorrow. — Staff Reporter

Restrictions

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Restrictions have been imposed on the transfer of officials engaged in the work connected with the elections to be held to the local bodies this year. The restrictions will continue till the work connected with the delimitation of wards and revision of voters lists of the local bodies, including municipalities other than Mattannur are over. — Special Correspondent

Three killed

MALAPPURAM: A man and his two children were killed when a jeep in which they were travelling collided with a truck on the National Highway 17 at Palakkal on Saturday afternoon. Two persons were injured in the accident. The police identified the deceased as Kadayangal Badruddin, 38; his son Ehsan, 8; and daughter Ehsana, 6. The bodies were removed to the Medical College Hospital at Kozhikode. The injured have been identified as Badruddin's cousin Sahira alias Bichu and her two-year-old son Mebin Shah. Sahira was admitted to the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences and Mebin to Medical College, Kozhikode. — Staff Reporter

SIB chairman

Thrissur: V.A. Joseph has been appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of South Indian Bank (SIB). He is the 10th chairman of the bank. Mr. Joseph, who has a doctorate in human resource development, hails from Kuravilangad in Kottayam district. A former deputy general manager of Syndicate Bank, he joined SIB in 2003 as executive director, a release said. — Staff Reporter

Case dismissed

KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Chief Judicial Magistrate V. Jayaram on Saturday dismissed a defamation case filed by writer Punathil Kunhabdulla against T. Padmanabhan, short story writer. The Magistrate dismissed the case as Mr. Kunhabdulla was not present in the court though he was asked to appear. Mr. Padmanabhan was present on Saturday. Mr. Kunhabdulla had filed a defamation case demanding Rs. 10 lakhs as compensation alleging that the latter had caused `irreparable damage' to Mr. Kunhabdulla's personality by featuring him as a `plagiarist' in a magazine. — Staff Reporter
