Boy killed during car rally

KOCHI, AUG. 21. A five-year-old boy, Boban Basil, was killed after being hit by a car participating in the Popular car rally here today.

The organisers have since terminated the rally. The accident took place at Thundam, under the Malayatoor Forest Division around 2-30 p.m.

The boy, son of Basil, Veleyil House, Nellikuzhi, was a UKG student at the Kothamangalam Green Valley School. The doctors accompanying the rally provided first aid and also accompanied the boy to the hospital but he succumbed to his injuries. He was declared dead when brought to the Mattoor Government Hospital.

The two-day 380 km rally had started today from Kochi and was expected to return after completing six stages. The Maruti Baleno car which hit the boy was being driven by V.R. Naren Kumar, who is a national champion and also the winner of the Popular rally last year.

The rally is held with zero traffic conditions. Spectators are usually allowed to line up the sides of the road to watch the rally. The boy had come to watch the rally with his father but ran across the road after the first car was flagged off. The cars are flagged off with a gap of two minutes and are usually travelling at a speed of 150 kms or more an hour.
